A to Zen

The Zen of Climbing is written by Francis Sanzaro PhD. In reviewing this pocket book, I observed similarities between Sanzaro’s ideas and the Tomatis® auditory stimulation method. Consequently, I have chosen several important quotes and discussed their connections.

About the author

Francis Sanzaro PhD is a climber, academic, speaker, and the author of books on philosophy, climbing, athletic theory and comparative religion.

The Zen of Climbing explores the fundamentals of success and failure in the sport of climbing. This book is part of the IN THE MOMENT collection of titles exploring themes of mindfulness and being present in our activities and environment.

Art of Attention

despite being in surplus attention is scarce

Although paying attention may seem like an easy task, it is frequently underestimated, and more complex than it appears.

A Tomatis® auditory opening programme aims to improve listening availability and attention. Consistent application can achieve lasting results.

The use of bone conduction through the Maestro headset, along with vocal exercises, activates the vestibular system to promote self-awareness, concentration and working memory.

Mozart's music is essential for enhancing attention, while Bach tracks improve focus and memory. Handel's compositions effectively refine listening attention.

Feedback Loops

be ready to react quickly to external triggers

Different modes of communication can distort messages and lead to confusion. Moreover, there are limitations in our body's communication mechanisms. Enhancing your auditory feedback abilities can help improve self-awareness and self-regulation.

During a Tomatis® intensive, experiencing resistance before embracing changes is common. While adults can often handle these adjustments, children may struggle, particularly if they cannot communicate verbally.

Progress is rarely linear; a child may temporarily revert to past behaviours. Embrace these regressions. They indicate that we have activated the brain, which must step outside its comfort zone.

Neural Pathways

nerves are a form of information

Your nerves respond to real and concrete issues like fear of failure, damage to your self-esteem, embarrassment, or pressure.

The Tomatis® Maestro headphones are a non-invasive tool that employs soft sounds to safely stimulate neural pathways. Their musical Gating® system helps retrain the brain and reorganise the nervous system, as salient stimuli carry both emotional and cognitive significance.

Plastic Fantastic

children know this, adults forget

Neuroscience studies indicate that our bodies naturally seek attention and stimulation. Children grasp this instinctively, while adults tend to ignore it.

A Tomatis® listening programme runs five days a week to improve plasticity, with two rest days for optimal results. After 14 days, a five-week phase of consolidation will follow.

It’s crucial to allow rest for the ear muscles during sessions to avoid overstimulation and support the nervous system. This approach helps maintain focus and alertness, supports brain plasticity, and facilitates the gradual integration of learning.

Needless to say this book is not just for climbers. I am not a climber at all! The front cover, colour and compactness are moreish - it feels good to pick it up and explore the A to Zen.
